Here's a nice display of the equinox dates on both Gregorian and Julian calendars. You can see the slowly drifting dates under the Julian system : http://www.ns1763.ca/equinox/eqindex.html

I've also found this article about the phenomenon -- http://www.space.com/spacewatch/050318_equinox.html -- accessible and detailed.

A UK company called Iceni ( http://www.iceni.com ) has very good tools in this area.
Gemini ( http://www.iceni.com/gemini.htm ) has a ton of PDF conversion options with output into multiple formats.
Then Infix PDF Editor allows the editing of the PDF files - as well as a load of extraction utilities. It has all the page manipulation functions (add, delete, move, rotate, etc) - it also has a fully functioned text editor that allows text to be reflowed, font changed, size changed & text block moved. Image editing, scale & image movement is also supported. See http://www.iceni.com/pdf_editor_infix.htm for free download.

Yes, I almost wrote about all three of us being first-day-of-the-season babies, but then I realized that winter really begins on December 21 or 22...so I'm not even that close! But you yourself have the honor of filling out our annual round-a-bout (with dad helping me anchor the winter point on the circle)...you are almost at the first day of summer (June 21 or 22). And as you ponted out, for summer and winter it's not a question of being 'equi' thus a different name: the solstices. These correspond to "the dates of maximum tilt of the Earth's equator" with the northern hemisphere being tilted as far as possible away from the sun during our winter.

But what is it that made us both think of the three kids anchoring the seasons, even though it's only two? That special something about our three birthdays is related to astology and not to astronomy: each of us was born on the cusp of a zodiac sign, in the middle of a month. There's plenty written online about zodiac sun signs and cusps and all that, but I find the astronomy and history so much more interesting...so I'll stop there.

I was surprised that you didn't include yourself in the "being born on the first of a season. I've always considered you to be born on the first day of winter. - - well, okay so maybe a few days before. But then, considering your research of the fluxuating days for the vernal and automnal equinox, the exact date appears not to be that important. And, it's just occurred to me that there really are only 2 equinox(s) (equini ?) after all, being that each of those 2 days have 12 hours night and 12 hours day. Never-the-less, I very un-scientifically proclaim that you are my "first day of the winter season" child. Also, if I'd had a fourth child, feel certain it would have been born on the first day of summer. Anyhow, you have enlightened me to something I probably must have known - but wasn't aware of it.

Elodie --- La Belle Artiste! Amazing child, but not surprisingly so. From rolling in finger-paint on butcher paper as an infant, and as a toddler, partaking of every artistic medium made available by a doting Mom and Dad, to copies of portraits by Leonardo Da Vinci? Wow! and only five years old!

Donna suggested I look up each of the "real" Leonardo paintings on the net and compare. I was astonished! If she was twelve, I'd still be impressed, but five years old? Egad --- most kids that age barely manage to make a stick figure. Elodie truly exudes talent.

What wonderful opportunities she's being given with an impressive and creative teacher who instructs the children to notice and see the differences (ie; the ear drawings, etc.) How patient and nurturing she must be. Elodie is certainly living in the right place for artists --- Paris, the home of great works of art, museums and l'ecoles d'art.

I hope she continues her interest and love of what she's creating, for she surely will excel in her artistic endeavors. I'm a proud Great Auntie, for sure, but also proud of her loving parents. Love Y'all! Auntie Carol
